Universal Laser M, V and X series migration program

Keep your laser. Replace the machine around it.

If you own a Universal Laser M, V or X series machine, you can move to a new VLS or PLS platform at program pricing and bring your laser cartridge with you if it's compatible with the platform you choose. Keeping your laser cartridge can reduce the cost of upgrading to a current machine.

A current ULR laser cartridge can move over if it's compatible with the platform you choose, and we confirm that in your review. Older UL-series lasers are exchanged for a current ULR cartridge, which we quote at the same time.

Please place your order by December 15, 2026. For orders after that date, contact us to confirm program availability.

Your M, V or X series

A new VLS platform

Why now

Why Universal started the program

Your M, V or X series machine has likely run reliably for 20 years or more. The machine isn't the problem. Several of its key electronic parts, including the CPU module, are no longer made, so Universal can't repair or replace them. If one of those boards fails, there may be no fix.

This is not a forced replacement. A machine that's running well can keep running. The program is a way to make the move on your schedule, at a lower cost, before a failure makes the decision for you.

What you keep, what you gain

You keep

  • Your compatible ULR laser cartridge, once we confirm it suits your new platform
  • Your cutting table, in most cases
  • Your existing artwork
  • The way you work today, printing to the laser from your graphics software

You gain

  • Current electronics with a full service path
  • A 2-year system parts warranty
  • Air assist and a 2.0 lens kit
  • 1-Touch Laser Photo and Direct Import software

Platforms and pricing

Your new VLS or PLS, without a laser

Each platform is priced without a laser, because you move your existing compatible laser cartridge into it, or both of them on a PLS6.150D.

Your current machine Recommended platform Work area
M series VLS3.75 24" x 12"
V series VLS4.75 24" x 18"
X series VLS6.75 32" x 18"
X2 series PLS6.150D 32" x 18"

Program pricing is quoted in your compatibility review.

What the price covers. The new platform with air assist, a 2.0 lens kit, the standard flat engraving table, Universal Control Panel (UCP) software, 1-Touch Laser Photo and Direct Import software, and a 2-year system parts warranty. Freight and any applicable sales tax are extra.

Moving up a size. You aren't limited to the matching size. Any eligible owner can choose any of the four platforms at program pricing, including the two-laser PLS6.150D. M-300 and M-360 owners keep the same 24" x 12" work area on a VLS3.75.

Older UL-series lasers. These don't fit a VLS or PLS. They're exchanged for a current ULR laser cartridge with a 1-year warranty. The exchange is priced by wattage, and we quote it in your review.

Want a new laser as well?

If your laser is near the end of its life, we can quote a complete system with a new laser next to the migration option, so you can compare the two side by side.

How it works

From review to running in five steps

  1. Send us your model, serial number and laser wattage.

  2. We check compatibility: laser cartridge, cutting table, accessories and PC.

  3. You get a written quote.

  4. You confirm your order, and we work out payment and delivery with you directly.

  5. Move your compatible laser cartridge into the new machine and print from your graphics software as before.

Things to plan for

None of these rule anyone out. They're worth knowing before you get a quote, and we'll go through each one in your review.

  • A Windows PCThe new platform needs a PC running Windows 10 or higher.
  • A 220–240 V circuitOnly for the PLS6.150D. It needs a 220–240 V, 15 A circuit.
  • A new rotaryLegacy rotary fixtures don't fit. A current rotary for your new platform is available if you use one.
  • A new cutting tableOnly if you move up a size. A table from a smaller machine won't fit a larger platform.
  • A laser exchangeOnly if your machine has an older UL-series laser, or if your current ULR laser has reached the end of its life. We quote it in your review.
  • Floor spaceOnly if you choose a larger platform.

Questions and answers

What owners ask us

Is my machine eligible?

Universal Laser M, V and X series machines built 1998 to 2008 are eligible, including the M-300, M-360, V-400, V-460, X-600, X-660, X2-600 and X2-660. The VL-200, VL-300, C-200, X-25, X-50 and X-100 are eligible on the same terms, and so is the X-660 SuperSpeed. If you aren't sure, send us your serial number and we'll tell you.

Do I have to replace my machine?

No. The program is optional. It exists so you can plan the move on your own schedule rather than after a failure.

Can I keep my laser?

Usually. A current ULR laser cartridge can move to the new machine if it's compatible with the platform you choose, and we confirm that in your review. Older UL-series lasers don't fit a VLS or PLS, so they're exchanged for a current ULR cartridge, which comes with a 1-year warranty. We quote the exchange in your review.

I have an X2 or a SuperSpeed. Can I keep both lasers?

Yes, if both are current ULR laser cartridges that are compatible with the PLS6.150D, which we confirm in your review. The PLS6.150D takes two lasers for up to 150 watts, and the PLS6.150D SuperSpeed needs a matched pair of lasers. Older UL-series lasers are exchanged for a current ULR cartridge. If you'd rather run one laser, the VLS6.75 is still an option.

Can I get more power?

Yes. VLS platforms take lasers up to 75 watts, and the PLS6.150D takes two lasers for up to 150 watts. A power upgrade can be arranged through the laser exchange program.

Can I move to a larger machine?

Yes. Any eligible owner can choose the VLS3.75, VLS4.75, VLS6.75 or PLS6.150D at program pricing.

Will my cutting table and rotary work?

Your cutting table works in most cases if you stay at the same size, and Universal supplies a magnet for it. A table from a smaller machine won't fit a larger platform. Legacy rotary fixtures don't fit a VLS or PLS, so plan on a current rotary for your new platform if you use one.

Will I need a new computer or new software?

You'll need a PC running Windows 10 or higher. Check with the maker of your graphics software (CorelDRAW, Illustrator) that your version runs on it.

Will I have to redo my artwork or settings?

UCP interprets the colors and lines in your artwork the same way as your existing software, so you don't need to change those elements. If you move to a machine with a larger work area, update the document's page size in your graphics software to match the new machine's work area. Material processing settings may still need adjustment and test runs.

Will my jobs run faster?

Expect about the same job times.

What is the warranty?

Two years on system parts for the new platform. An exchange laser cartridge carries its own 1-year warranty. A laser you bring over keeps whatever coverage it has today.

What happens to my old machine?

Motors, belts, bearings and sensors are worth keeping as spares, and the frame can be recycled. We go over the details in your review.

When should I place my order?

Please place your order by December 15, 2026. For orders after that date, contact us to confirm program availability.
