Overview
The 1.5-inch (38.1 mm) lens assembly is Universal Laser Systems’ go-to optic for ultra-fine engraving, micro-text, and photo-quality etching. By positioning the focal point closer to the work surface and producing a spot size roughly 40 % smaller than a 2.0″ lens, it captures the highest possible resolution from your CO₂ laser—while also granting an extra ½″ (12.7 mm) of Z-axis clearance for taller parts.
Average focal length: 1.5″ (38.1 mm)
Focus tolerance: ±0.075″ (±1.905 mm)
Typical spot diameter: ≈0.003″ (0.076 mm)
Key benefits
Advantage | What it means for you |
---|---|
Pin-sharp detail | Engrave fonts under 1 mm, intricate logos, and high-resolution photos with crisp edges. |
Field-upgradeable | Drops into any supported PLS or VLS system (1996 +); swap lenses in minutes without tools. |
Extra table height | Shorter focal length adds ½″ (12.7 mm) of Z travel—handy for thicker jigs or fixtures. |
Interchangeable | Keep multiple lenses on hand; change optics to match the job without realignment headaches. |
Thin kerf on fine cuts | Produces narrow slots and minimal char on thin materials and veneers. |
Limitations to keep in mind
Constraint | Impact |
---|---|
Closer to the work | Lens sits nearer the material—protect it from resin, smoke, and debris. |
Limited thick-cut capacity | Best for materials ≤ 0.20″ / 5 mm; beam divergence reduces power density at depth. |
Tight focus window | ±0.075″ tolerance means material must be flat and firmly fixtured. |
Model exclusions | Not compatible with PLS 6MW, ILS, or XLS platforms. |
